Well Played, Shelley Duncan

Griffin Whitman, a 10-year-old Red Sox fan from Swampscott, was excited to attend his first Yankees vs. Red Sox game Friday night. The young autograph -collector was even more thrilled to score Yankees outfielder Shelley Duncan’s signature before the game. That is, until Griffin read the message from the 27-year-old rookie: “Red Sox suck! Shelley Duncan.”

DAMNIT!

Isiah Thomas has shown enough "evident progress" to earn a multiyear contract extension, several New York-area newspapers reported Monday.
The New York Times, citing a person "briefed on the matter," says Thomas will sign the new deal to remain both team president and head coach on Monday. The Knicks are 29-34, but are in the hunt for their first playoff berth since 2004.

So Now What?!?: 2005-2006 Edition

Now that we know Joe is staying, what's next?
Joe Torre He shouldn't have been fired but I have my concerns. One of the hardest things to do in sports is to win championships with a team, go through a dry spell, and then win championships again. When I asked a number of friends, Erwin came up with Casey Stengel. So history is not on Joe Torre's side.* Also, he made some boneheaded moves during the playoffs. He should not have started Gary Sheffield. There was enough power in the lineup that we could have lived with having Craig Wilson play first. Shit, I would have rathered Giambi play first, Hideki at DH and Melky in LF. I know Giambi was hurt but at least he would have first base instincts. The musical chairs with A-Rod was a joke. Having him bat sixth was one thing but 8th was just a big "Fuck you". I would not have left Jaret Wright out there after the score became 3-0 knowing Cory Lidle (who, while shaky, has better stuff) was just sitting there clipping his fingernails. That said, if Lou Pinella is the best alternative, I'll stick with Joe one more year before we can convince Tommy Lasorda to come out of retirement.
Alex Rodriguez Unless we can get someone like Dontrelle Willis or Carlos Zambrano with some choice prospects, I say we keep him. He had one "bad" year (or as bad as you can call .290, 35 HR, 121 RBI, .392 OBP, .523 SLG) and I'm not ready to give up on him yet. He does need to be quiet when it comes to the press. Joe Torre needs to stop humiliating him (putting him sixth behind Hideki and Sheff who had barely played this season, then starting him 8th was crazy). That Sports Illustrated article should have NEVER happened. I also think it's time for Derek Jeter to man up and support A-Rod publicly. He always talks about team this and team that. He knows that him supporting A-Rod would help the TEAM. If he doesn't, someone needs to let him know that's part of being "The Captain".
Gary Sheffield It's been a great ride but I'm sorry, you've got to go. Bobby Abreu, while not the RBI machine you are, is the kind of scrappy hitter the Yankees need right now. Plus, we owe him way too much money to keep both of you. I suggest a sign and trade so he doesn't get pissed and offer his services to the Red Sox for nothing.
The Pitching We're stuck with Randy Johnson. Mike Mussina isn't worth 17 million dollars and I hope him and his agent are smart enough to realize it. A one year deal will suffice. Lost Jaret Wright (as is the tradition of getting rid of the guy who loses the last game in the playoffs). Go after Barry Zito (who only sucks when he plays against us) and Daisuke Matsuzaka. Let's see what Philip Hughes has got. And sign every available closer and relegate them to setup men. Carl Pavano should become a setup guy only because I don't want him to leave without at least earning some of his money.
Steinbrenner Stop trying to buy the biggest, oldest bat on the market. We had a good thing in the late 90's with stars and role players. We have guys in our lineup who would be the anchor for a lot of other teams, however there is no one rowing the boat and all the weight is making the ship sink EVERY YEAR. Let Cashman do his job (and, on the side, call Gene Michael and ask him if he'd be interested in Cashman's job in 2008).

The Apocalypse Has Arrived

You b!tch a$$ motherf*cker!!
The New York Knicks fired coach Larry Brown on Thursday, replacing him as coach with president and general manager Isiah Thomas.
The Knicks finished 23-59 in Brown's first and only season at the helm.
"Larry has had a long and storied career. We hired him last summer with the expectation that he would be with the Knicks for a long time. Sometimes decisions work and sometimes they don't," MSG Chairman James L. Dolan said. "After careful consideration, despite the best intentions from everyone involved, this current structure did not work for us last season and I did not think it was going to improve next season."
Thomas, who joined the Knicks as president and general manager on Dec. 22, 2003, previously served as a head coach with the Indiana Pacers for three seasons from 2000-01 through 2002-03. His Pacers teams were 131-115 record, making the playoffs in each of his three seasons.
"No one in our organization is happy with last season and we all accept responsibility for our performance," Thomas said. "This has been a difficult time for the entire organization and our fans. Today begins the 2006-07 season for the Knicks, and I strongly believe we are on the right track to take major steps in our rebuilding process to achieve our goal of being one of the premier teams in the NBA."

Score

"There's an illusion of team play in place...so none of the Lakers realize that Kobe [Bryant] is the wolf from Teen Wolf and they're basically "The Other Guys"
-Bill Simmons
Kobe scored 81 points last night. Wow. I need to go home and watch Sportscenter tonight. It was one thing when Wilt scored 100. He was a huge center. They didn't make guys like Wilt back then. Or guys like Wilt didn't know they should be playing basketball. But from a shooting guard? 81 points! I have spread a lot of Kobe hate over the years but that is just amazing.
On the other side, how useless does the rest of the Lakers feel? I mean they only scored 41 points. The whole team. Seriously. It was like that episode of The Fresh prince of Bel-Air when Will joined the basketball team and the coach's whole strategy was "Pass the ball to Will". But that wasn't even the case because the Lakers only had 18 assists as a team (Lamar Odom had 7 of them) so Kobe was creating a majority of those shots himself.
Like, why even come to work? After a game like that, the players should be coming up to him like...
Lamar: Hey Kobe. Great game.
Kobe: Thanks. Hey, you had some great passes there. I couldn't have done it without you.
Lamar: Yeah right. Listen me and the guys were talking.
Kobe: Yeah?
Lamar: Do you want to sleep with any of our wives or girlfriends tonight?
Kobe: What?!?
Lamar: No really. Any one of them. The way we figure it, the only reason we got girlfriends and wives like we do is because we're basketball players. But tonight, I feel like I didn't earn the right to climb into that bed. So, have at it. Get to 100 points on us.
Kobe: Um...no thanks. But thanks man. Maybe next time.
Lamar: Sure.
Or something like that...

Don't Quit Your Day Job
I hope everyone on the U.S.C defense (especially the secondary) have good majors.
Like you see a great college player and he'll have a major like "Television history".
Those guys.
I bet they are all pre-med, pre-law or business management.
Because they know football is NOT in their future.

So, i was sitting in the parking lot of IKEA waiting for my friends and I reluctantly turned on the radio to hear the Giants score.
It was 14-14. Then, all of the sudden, The Giants reeled off two quick TDs to make it 28-14. I turned the radio off.
When we were driving back to Harlem, I turned on the radio and it was 38-14. I turned it off again.
So when we were parked in front of my friend's apartment, i turned the radio on to see if it was over.
38-30.
Right there, i almost lost my mind.
I knew we were going to lose.
I knew it.
When Matt Bryant missed that first FG in the fourth quarterm, I knew he couldn't hit the game winner.
What a bunch of screw-ups.
That first half was the greatest offense half the New York Giants have ever played. They looked like the fucking Cowboys. Unstoppable.
I will stop crying now but I am as ashamed as anyone short of Jim Fassel can be for being a Giants fan.
And I will end it on this note.
Jason Sehorn Must Die
